FAQs

What is Free Unlimited Wi-Fi Service?

Free Unlimited Wi-Fi access is available on selected Telkom Mobile postpaid and hybrid contract offers and enables subscribers to access the internet at any Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for free. Contract subscribers will only qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi every month if Free Unlimited Wi-Fi access is specified as a feature of their offer or deal.

Are there any restrictions on the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi service?

Free Unlimited Wi-Fi for qualifying offers or deals is allocated as follows:

  • The free unlimited Wi-Fi has a fair usage cap of 10GB per month.
  • The free unlimited Wi-Fi speed will be throttled to 128kbps if you reach a data usage of 10GB via Wi-Fi access before the end of the month.
  • The speed will be reset to normal speed at the beginning of each month.

What authentication method is used for handset devices and laptops?

Handset devices will be authenticated via EAP-SIM. However, subscribers with laptop devices that connect using a modem or router will need to authenticate via MAC authentication. Laptop users will need to register and / or sign in to the My Telkom Mobile self service portal at http://www.telkommobile.co.za/login, add the MAC address of their laptop and connect to the SSID “Telkom Mobile Connect”. They will then be authenticated and connected to the internet.

What is an EAP-SIM?

EAP stands for Extensible Authentication Protocol and is a generic framework for network authentication i.e. it provides access to a network. The EAP-SIM technology uses the subscriber identity and credentials contained in any SIM card to automatically access a Wi-Fi network without the need for the user to input a pre-established password.

What is a MAC address?

MAC address stands for Media Access Control Address. A MAC address is a hardware identification number that uniquely identifies each device on a network. The MAC address is manufactured into every network card, such as an Ethernet card or Wi-Fi card, and therefore cannot be changed.

Can I use another, secondary device to access the Wi-Fi?

Yes, Telkom Mobile understands that you may need to use a different device other than the device that uses your SIM card to access the Wi-Fi service. Therefore, Telkom Mobile allows you to use a secondary device (e.g. a laptop or tablet) to access the Wi-Fi service activated on your SIM card. All you need to do is link the MAC address of your secondary device to the SIM card provisioned with the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi. This option is only applicable to contract offers that qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi as a feature of the product and is not applicable to prepaid subscribers that qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi based on airtime recharge.

How do I link a second device to access the Wi-Fi?

You will need the MAC address of the wireless adapter of your second device.

How do I find the MAC address of the second device?

To find the MAC address you have to do the following:

If using MAC OSX

  • Click on Apple Menu.
  • Click on System Preference.
  • Click on Network.
  • Then click on Advanced.
  • The Wi-Fi address will be at the bottom of the screen.

If using Windows XP

  • Click on the Start Menu, and then select the Run item.
  • Type cmd in the text field.
  • A terminal window will appear on the screen.
  • Type ipconfig /all and enter.
  • There will be a block of information for each adapter on your computer. Look in the description field for wireless.
  • The Physical Address for that block is your wireless MAC address.

If using Linux

  • In a terminal window type ifconfig and enter.
  • You'll see a list of interfaces.
  • Your wireless interface will likely be named wlan0 orwifi0.
  • The wireless MAC address will be in the field labelled HWaddr.
  • You can also use iwconfig to find your wireless MAC address if you have it installed.

How do I link a secondary MAC address to the MSISDN number that has been allocated the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi access?

  • Connect to the SSID: Telkom Mobile Guest.

I have subscribed to a Telkom Mobile offer but did not qualify for the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi service. What other options are available?

You can buy two types of ad-hoc time based Wi-Fi bundles that are available to Telkom Mobile subscribers:

  • Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi 30 minutes bundle for R25
  • Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi 60 minutes bundle for R40

Where can I purchase Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi ad-hoc bundles?

Dial *180# from your handset or Telkom Mobile modem dashboard or visit http://www.telkommobile.co.za/login to purchase a Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi ad-hoc bundle from your spend limit or airtime balance.

How does a Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi ad-hoc bundle work?

Depending on the bundle purchased, the Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi ad-hoc bundle will give you either 30 minutes or 60 minutes to access the internet via Telkom Mobile’s Wi-Fi network. The access is unlimited and will stop once the allocated access window has expired. The countdown of the access window begins once the time based Wi-Fi ad-hoc bundle is activated; therefore you need to be in a Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot when purchasing the bundle.

Who can purchase Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi ad-hoc bundles?

All prepaid subscribers and all postpaid and hybrid offers that don’t have Free Unlimited Wi-Fi by default.

Where can I access Telkom Mobile’s Wi-Fi Service?

Some of Telkom Mobile’s participating Wi-Fi partners include McDonalds, Nandos, Spur Steak Ranches, Wimpy, King Pie City, Ocean Basket, Steers and Chesa Nyama.

To locate additional Telkom Mobile hotspots around the country please visit http://www.telkommobile.co.za/coverage/wifi.

I am subscribed to Telkom Mobile’s prepaid and hybrid / top-up offer. Do I get free Wi-Fi access?

Hybrid or top-up offers that don’t have Free Unlimited Wi-Fi by default and prepaid offers that do not qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi access by default, do qualify for Wi-Fi promotional bundles based on airtime recharge value. Wi-Fi promotional bundles based on the value of airtime recharge are allocated as follows:

Recharge Value Wi-Fi Promotional Bundles Fair Usage Policy
R50-R99.99 7 days unlimited Wi-Fi Access 2GB cap for 7 days
R100 and more 30 days unlimited Wi-Fi Access 10GB cap for 30 days

Only one Wi-Fi promotional bundle at a time can be allocated and exist during the 7 day or 30 day access period. Any subsequent recharges during this period will not qualify for additional Wi-Fi promotional bundles or extend the expiry window. You are able to qualify for a new promotional bundle when you recharge with R50 or more after the expiry of the 7 day or 30 day access window.

Below are examples of two possible scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: If you recharge with R50 - R99.99, you will be allocated 7 days of Wi-Fi, with a 2GB usage cap for the 7 days; provided that there is no other Wi-Fi promotional bundle that already exists. Any further recharges during the 7 days period will not result in the allocation of another Wi-Fi promotional bundle. Only on the 8th day can the plan be allocated with another Wi-Fi promotional bundle if you recharge with airtime.
  • If you recharge with R100 or more, you will be allocated 30 days of Wi-Fi, with a 10GB usage cap for the 30 days; provided that there is no other Wi-Fi promotional bundle that already exists. Any further recharges during the 30 days period will not result in the allocation of another Wi-Fi promotional bundle. Only on the 31st day can the plan be allocated with another Wi-Fi promotional bundle if you recharge with airtime.

Can I access the Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi service at any Wi-Fi hotspot?

No. Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi access is limited to Telkom Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.
